Splash, splash, splash. It seems like we have constantly been dreaming about splashes in the studio over the last four or so months. I suppose I should mention that these are paint splashes. Whatever we do, wherever we go we see paint on objects and think about how this could create a flying splash of paint. Anyway now I have thoroughly confused you I think I'd better let you in on a little secret which I have been keeping from you over the last 4 months. Although I must say it isn't really a little secret it's a massive secret that I have been dying to tell you about for so long but Mike was keeping a tight leash on the blog so I couldn't sneakily post anything. Anyway the wait is now over hurray, this is where the serious stuff starts. We have been working on a advertising campaign for Dow Coating Materials, if you are unsure of who DCM (as we call them) are follow this link to find out about them http://www.dow.com/coating/. Basically DCM supply chemicals to put into paints that give them their different properties for different jobs.
We have created 4 adverts for DCM that demonstrate what DCM value as the four pillars for the growth of business (Inspiration, Collaboration, Innovation and Growth). For the inspiration advert we took inspiration from the structure of the atom with electrons flying around the central mass of the atom itself. I am sure you can even tell on this small scale the amount of detail that has gone into this particularly where the different coloured splashes intersect with each other.
For the collaboration idea together with PR agency in Switzerland, Gibbs and Soell we drew on the idea of the co-existence of koi carp which pulls on a particular interest for myself as at home we have a few koi carp in a pond, and it was nice to be able to have an input into this idea however little it may have been. These splashes aren't so much flying splashes as like the other three adverts. The koi splashes are more like paint splashes that have splashed vertically onto a piece of paper (I think standing splashes is the phrase I'm looking for).
The next in the series of the four pillars is the Innovation advert which drew us into the bridge idea due to bridges being highly technological and requiring innovation to put the invention into production. I would say that this design is my personal favourite out of the four adverts I think this is because of the sleekness of the splashes. And I believe from my conversations with Mike that some of the splashes from me chucking paint around in the car park are in this advert. Please follow this link to my blog about 'My Hand' from a number of weeks ago.
This brings us to the end with the final advert for the four pillars being Growth. This may be a bit of an understatement but the image we went for with the gowth pillar was a tree although it is a tree with a bit of a difference to it. And you will see what I mean in just a few seconds. As Dow Coating Materials are a truly global organisation we felt it would be very appropriate to show a tree looking like the land mass of earth, therefore representing growth at a global level which Dow Coating Materials are doing.
We hope that you enjoyed seeing the finished products of nigh on four months work, a lot of late nights went into some of these designs so you may understand if we kind of feel very protective of all of our splash designs. The four adverts you see above now take pride of place on our display wall in the studio which features many pieces of work from the past. As I was pointing out earlier with the atom the detail even at this size is great but when you see these printed to A1 size it does look amazing and allows you to appreciate even more the detail that has gone into this work.
As always I welcome all comments on the adverts.
Matt
