Over the past month there have been a number of posts I have put on the eatsleepthink blog where I have been referring to the Mi Book but I wasn't in a position to actually say that the characters were for the Mi Book. If you are unsure of what characters I am talking about follow these links to the blog I did on the two characters, character 1 blog and character 2 blog. If you are wondering about why I was talking about garden gnomes and fast food adverts etc it was all to put you off the scent of what the characters were actually for. I think it worked and anyway I had a lot of fun thinking up these weird cover stories. Anyway now the Mi Book was launched at the Futures Fair in Fargate, Sheffield last week I am now able to show you exactly what we have been producing for Sheffield Futures.
Above we have the front cover of the Mi Book. If you look at the character second image in from the top right corner, look who it is. It's Big Mac Head!. Obviously there is probably a more official name for him, but I like Big Mac Head so that's what I am going to stick with. In all seriousness now this character was actually produced by Gary for the Healthy Eating page in the Mi Book, as you will later down this post.
Here is page 5 of the Mi Book and as I am sure you can see this is the Active Living page. I am not going to pretend to be some sort of fitness instructor and lecture you on how to maintain an active lifestyle. Although I do occasionally take place in the odd fitness activity I am not one to be able to comment on other people.
This is page 23 of the Mi Book in the Sexual Health section. This would be very helpful for any young person in Sheffield or the surrounding area who was worried about their sexual health and wasn't sure who they could turn too for advice. This topic is often something that you can't talk to your parents about therefore that is why this Mi Book is so helpful to young people. The book lists the places to go or who to ring for help related to this topic.
This is again a similar story as the Active Living page, I don't feel like I am able to lecture people on healthy eating. I am no different to most people who enjoy there sweets, snacks and fast food meals etc. However I do try and limit the amount I eat per week. Reading this page myself has made me think again about the diet I have and how I could improve it. Personally I believe it is more a case of people not having the time or motivation to cook themselves a meal with vegetables etc.
Here is the first page of the Family and Relationships section. It is a kind of mini contents page for this section. You may have noticed by now that all the characters on display in the mini contents pages are representative of the sub-section i.e. the bereavement sub section has a character all dressed in black which is a kind of symbol for someone grieving (bereavement).
The travel page basically is set out to give contact information out to young people to allow them to find out about how to get around the city, without getting a lift in your parents car. This is something I feel strongly about mainly due to the CO2 emissions caused by 1 person using a large engined car when they could use public transport or at least car share for when going to work, which would greatly help the environment.
Money Myths a relevant yet interesting and catchy title. Clearly this page is to give young people some information about what sort of money they could be entitled too whether they go into an apprenticeship or college. As well as what sort of financial situation you could expect to be in if you decide to go down the university route. Although this is only the very basic of information it still gives an idea of the different financial scenario's that can be experienced depending on the path you choose after school.
I really hope you have enjoyed reading my blog about the Mi Book but more so I hope that you like what we have produced and that this makes you think about going down to Sheffield Futures on Division Street and asking for one.
Matt
